Fight against Scandia Wind may move south

Fight against Scandia Wind may move south
Lake Michigan P.O.W.E.R. Coalition welcomes new members and support from Muskegon, Ottawa counties
PENTWATER, MI –The grassroots coalition group currently fighting an offshore wind factory proposed for Lake Michigan off Oceana and Mason counties is hoping to garner new support from residents further south, as Scandia Wind approaches new communities with an expanded proposal.
Scandia Wind met Monday with local officials and invite-only guests from Muskegon and Ottawa counties to discuss building a wind factory off their communities in the lake.
“Adding locations along the Lake Michigan shoreline they want to build doesn’t alleviate the concerns we have with Scandia and its proposal,” said a Lake Michigan P.O.W.E.R. Coalition spokesperson. “We formed to protect the pristine nature of our greatest natural asset, and we welcome additional members and support from our neighbors further south.”
The coalition continues to maintain this is a state issue, and is supporting legislation in the House and Senate that would place a moratorium on offshore wind projects until a state regulatory process is established. Currently, the Michigan Great Lakes Wind Council is working on legislative recommendations for state Legislature.
“We continue to have environmental, economic and cultural concerns regarding the Scandia proposal, and are insisting the state develop a regulatory process to protect our rights before any proposal or developer is allowed to move forward building what could end up being a giant mistake in our lake.”
